Little things?

by adustyframe ~ November 30th, 2006

Do you think when you tell someone they’re doing a good job it’s a little thing?
What about watching someone’s child for an hour?

Giving a child a ride home?

Sending a note?

Saying “I’m praying for you”?

Sharing a Bible verse?

Asking “Are you doing alright?”

Visiting someone who’s sick (or in prison)?

No, these are not small things. They are huge.

I think that often we believe that these things are too small to do any good when the needs are so great.

I am here to tell you that is untrue.

Every word of encouragement, pat on the back, smile, “I’m praying for you”, ride home for my child, note in my mailbox, visit to my husband is huge.

These things remind us that God extends his love to us through those around us.

If you know someone that needs a visit, or could use a phone call to say that you’re praying just do it. Don’t worry about it not being enough.

Many times these seemingly little things have been direct answers to my prayers.

I shared how I prayed and asked God to send me encouragement and someone came to see me with an apple pie. That morning she probably did not know how badly I ached for someone to let me know they cared. But as she worked and baked and took time to stop by, she was being used by God right where she was to minister to me.

When Pastor visits my husband or somone at church sends him a note, it is not a small thing. It’s reminders that he is not alone, that he is loved and cared for.

If all you can do is pray, then pray. Just let the person know.

If all you can do is put $5 in an envelope, do it.

If all you can do is watch a single mom’s child for an hour so she can pull herself back together, do it.

These things mean more than you can ever imagine.

Matthew 25:44 & 45

Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

Thank you for such a practical post! I know I am sometimes guilty of feeling that I can’t do enough but then not doing anything, so thank you for the gentle reprimand and the reminder that the smallest things we can do are important.
