The Beauty of Christmas Music
by adustyframe ~ December 12th, 2006I have always loved Christmas music. When we dug out our decorations this year, the cd’s went in an old rusty basket next to the CD player. We have been picking a CD to listen to everyday. Some of them are secular, they are enjoyable too.
However, the hauntingly beautiful hymns of this season always refresh my spirit.
I truly love these songs that focus our hearts on the true meaning of the season.
For school this month, we’re learning Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne.
It emphasizes the point that Jesus was left out and that we can make room for him in our hearts. (That is truly the point of Christmas.)
Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown,
When Thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
For Thy holy nativity.
Refrain
O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.
Heaven’s arches rang when the angels sang,
Proclaiming Thy royal degree;
But of lowly birth didst Thou come to earth,
And in great humility.
Refrain
The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest
In the shade of the forest tree;
But Thy couch was the sod, O Thou Son of God,
In the deserts of Galilee.
Refrain
Thou camest, O Lord, with the living Word,
That should set Thy people free;
But with mocking scorn and with crown of thorn,
They bore Thee to Calvary.
Refrain
When the heav’ns shall ring, and her choirs shall sing,
At Thy coming to victory,
Let Thy voice call me home, saying “Yet there is room,
There is room at My side for thee.”
My heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus,
When Thou comest and callest for me.
I am accompanying a soloist at church for the following spiritual
Sweet Little Jesus Boy
This beautiful song also touches my heart and reminds me to not allow the world to crowd out Jesus. I tried to find a good sample to listen to but Kenny Rogers was the only one and he did NOT sing it in the spirit I like to hear it in. I leave you to google it on your own.
Sweet little Jesus boy
They made you be born in a manger
Sweet little holy child
We didn’t know who you were
Didn’t know you’d come to save us Lord
To take our sins away
Our eyes were blind, we could not see
We didn’t know who you were
Long time ago
You were born
Born in a manger Lord
Sweet little Jesus boy
The world treats you mean Lord
Treats me mean too
But that’s how things are down here
We don’t know who you are
You have told us how
We are trying
Master you have shown us how
Even when you were dying
Just seems like we can’t do right
Look how we treated you
But please Sir forgive us Lord
We didn’t know it was you
Sweet little Jesus boy
Born a long time ago
Sweet little holy child
We didn’t know who you were
In the Bleak Midwinter
(Listen here. Not the best quality but you can at least hear the tune. Free sheet music here)
This is a beautiful song based on a poem by Christina Rosetti. I am especially touched by the question “What can I give Him?” Give him my heart. That is all he asks.
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
Enough for Him, Whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, Whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.
Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.
What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.
More Christmas carol sheet music can be found here.
There are so many more wonderful Christmas songs I could share with you. I can’t really choose favorites.
I must say that hearing my son belt out the “Gloria” chorus of Angels We have Heard On High makes my day every time. I am fairly certain that the Lord likes to hear it too.
The Carnival of Beauty is hosted at Susanna’s today. Read more posts about the Beauty of Christmas music.

Dusty, this was beautiful. I just wanted to let you know I’m going to include you in a short of list of “Blogs You Should Be Reading” on a post at my site tomorrow, if that’s okay with you. Do you mind?

Thank you for the entry
I love the first and last hymns too. (although we know it couldn’t have been a bleak mid winter:)…..but you are right. It envokes a real sense of awe at the events of Christ’s birth. You may have noticed my (frequent) reference to hymns
