Reading
by adustyframe ~ December 13th, 2006My husband said one of the best things about prison is the library.
In jail, there is a cart with books. Once in awhile the carts circulate between pods. Otherwise you look at the same books over and over.
In prison there is a library with access to inter-library loan.
He has not been a reader. He never enjoyed it.
Now he’s reading like crazy and I’m proud of him.
He’s reading about military generals and drawing parallels to his own life. (Fighting the enemy, drawing boundaries, making plans to overcome.)
He’s reading homeschool books to give me tips.
He’s reading books about being a godly man.
He wants to know if there are any strong books about being a godly father.
Any suggestions?
I guess the library strictly enforces a “no talking” rule. So he says he forbids one of his cell mates from going to the library with him. He got in trouble because according to my husband, “This guy never shuts up.”
My husband wanting to read like crazy and wanting to obey the rules just makes my day!
I love hearing him share what he’s been reading and applying it to his life.
God is good.

I have just read through your entire blog – all 14 pages. My heart goes out to you, and yet, I marvel at the faith and strength God is bringing forth in you and your husband. Thank you for sharing your heart, your ups and downs. I will be back to visit again soon;

This is my first visit to your blog so I am not familiar with your story – but I read your blog on the Advent for Evangelicals site a few days ago and have prayed for you since then. My husband recently read FamilyMan,FamilyLeader that Vision Forum sells and said it was THE BEST book he had read on the topic and that it was very powerful – not wimpy like some books. Not sure if he would be able to get this through his library – but maybe someday it would make a good read for him. Prayers with you-Tiffany

Shepherding a Child’s heart is one that I know a lot of men have enjoyed reading.

Have you come across ‘Christian Living in the Home’ by Jay Adams?
It is a great book, for men and women. I highly recommend it and so does David.

I haven’t read these, and maybe you already saw this list, I forget if you referenced Girl Talk in a previous post (I like a fair bit of the stuff on it, though certainly not all, and I recommend it for you if you haven’t read it before)
But, for your husband, here is a list:

Looking through my shelves, here is a list of books I have enjoyed/been convicted by, though not necessarily directly about being a godly father.

The Cross Centered Life by CJ Mahaney
Help, I Think God is Trying to Kill Me by Michael Pitts
The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan
The Godly Man’s Picture by Thomas Watson
Revolution by George Barna
The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
Reforming Marriage by Douglas Wilson
And on my bookshelf, but I haven’t read yet:
Growing Pains by Randall Balmer

Thank you so much. For his Christmas gift I was able to find Raising A Modern Day Knight.
I also sent him The Power of a Praying Husband.
Thanks for all your tips, I’ll check them out or send the list and see what he can check out at his library.
