This is so true. My father was an alcoholic, and I would wince when people made jokes about drunks or thought it was funny to act like they were drunk. It isn't funny at all.

I thought the same thing when a dear friend's mother died, and in that week I saw so many light references to death. As you said, maybe it was just a sensitive time, but I wince now when I hear jokes about death, hoping it is not painful for anyone near who may have lost someone.

You know, I've never given thought to it before, but thanks for mentioning it. I'll be careful in the future with my words.

I told my exhusband, it's like he's on another planet. A totally different world, different societal structure. A city surrounded by razor wire. Even though I am angry and devastated by what he did, I still care about him and, frankly, would not wish prison on anyone.
I have, however, been guilty of saying I wish I was in jail. When he was in the county lockup and I was struggling with supporting four kids and dealing with the courts and the community aftermath of his crime, I once told him I wished I was in jail with three square meals and a roof over my head guaranteed. Instead I have to worry about where my kids' next meal is coming from.
Sorry, just venting a little. :D
It's nice to know someone understands how you feel.

Thanks Ladies.

Hannah, I feel for your sister in law. I have thanked God many times that he only blessed us with one baby right now!
My husband isn't innocent--I know I've said that before but I didn't want you to miss that.
Things that don't make sense and that are unfair have definitely happened, but he's not innocent. Just wanted to clear that up.

I just wanted to let you know that I understand completely what you are saying. I have been reading your blog for a couple months now. I found it just after my older brother went to prison for the third time (he totally deserves to be there, though.) I started reading your blog because my sister-in-law has a five month old daughter and is pregnant with her second child and I found ways to encourage her as I read what you wrote. So, this is also a huge thank you.
(oh, and if I may, Patricia, I hate the mother-in-law jokes too, but for a different reason. I'm a daughter-in-law, and my m-i-l is absolutely wonderful!)

Maybe it is because you are sensative right now, but I understand. I feel the same way about mother in law jokes. Though I never told them, it didn't bother me that other people did - until I became a mother in law.
