Unfair?
by adustyframe ~ August 3rd, 2007Last night, Lee called.
We talked about my not visiting. We talked about James. We talked about a few other things.
Lee said, “Did you read the paper on Sunday?” I had not.
He described a horrible crime that occurred in this jurisdiction.
The punishment? 90 days in jail.
I was silent for a moment as a deep anger surged through me.
How is it possible that a crime as horrible as this one occurring the same court system as we are in, could be given such a little sentence? How is it possible that Lee is serving so much more time for something considerably less of a crime?
He said, “It makes me angry too. But you know, I was laying on my bunk last night really mad about it and I realized something. When was I ever going to change? When was I going to get right with God? If I had gotten 90 days, I don’t know that I would have ever changed.”
God sent a huge peace and joy through my heart at Lee’s words. Yes, God had to wake up my husband and he used a huge sentence to do so.
What a blessing that Lee realizes it. What a blessing to hear him say it.
Actually there have been times in the past that we have discussed this. We know that God was willing to do whatever was necessary to bring Lee back to himself.
We have seen many other cases in our area that receive hardly any punishment. It always angers me.
Pastor reminds me that Lee is a believer and that God holds us to a higher standard. He says as unfair and mind boggling as Lee’s sentence is, God is chastening Lee as one of his own children.
God knows what is best no matter what we think is fair.
I read these following verses in my Proverbs reading today.
Proverbs 3:11, 12My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

It can be so hard to see God in those situations. I know. How wonderful that you both have found some peace in this.

Do you know if there are manadtory sentencing guidelines in your jurisdiction? I am just curious. That is one of the things I cover in my classes.

He has such a wonderful perspective — how neat that the Lord is keeping him from bitterness and helping him “see” things from the right angle.

Gina, I don’t know! There must not be if people do horrible things and get “no” time.

It is so wonderful to see God working in Lee’s life. For him toverbalize that realization is awesome!
I will be praying that the paperwork you need to arrive does so quickly !
Have a great weekend
