First Day of School

by adustyframe ~ September 4th, 2007

James started 1st grade today. I’m slightly ambivalent about my son being such an official school boy.

I posted my Year 1 schedule here. We jumped right into Tuesday today. I’m not going to worry about skipping Monday’s to do’s. We’ll get them next week.

We read about Jesus in the Temple for our Bible reading. Then we went outside to take the “first day of school” photo in the same place we did last year. The sun was shining too brightly though so all I got was a squinty eyed cheesy grin. I will probably attempt another photo tomorrow.

We made bread together. I read a neat idea online last year. The mom made a recipe with her children on the 1st day of school. The children had to do all the work though. The object lesson is that if children do not follow directions, things do not turn out well.

I was trying to decide which recipe I could trust James to do on his own. I told Lee this idea and he said, “Why don’t you just make bread in the bread machine?”

That was a wonderful idea. I’m thankful that Lee is as involved as he can be in our schooling.

Our wheat bread was very yummy this afternoon at our tea time. We slathered it with butter and drizzled honey over the warm bread. MMM….

We started An Island Story, Aesop’s Fables, Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare, and A Child’s Garden of Verse.

James was excited to get back to the math. He had a break from that over the summer.

We actually got our Spanish in today. We read a book together and repeated the Spanish words and did quite a bit of laughing over our attempts to say them correctly.

The copywork will have to start tomorrow. As I was on my way to bed last night, I realized I hadn’t prepared the first selection. I started to beat myself up and then said, “STOP” one day (or two or three) without copywork will not ruin the entire year.

I referred to my schedule quite a few times and I think it’s going to work out really well. We shall see after a week or so.

We played a rousing game of Connect 4 during tea time since we had read Shakespeare earlier while we waited for the bread to finish.

All in all I think the 1st day of 1st grade was superb.

In researching private and alternative schools, I found one in particular that has a very different philosophy…

The children and teacher move through the grades together ‘as a family’. I liked that idea.

The other thing that struck me as unique, was that every day they made their snack together – homemade and healthy. Usually bread. Again reflecting the home-y/family philosophy of this classroom.

Fresh homemade bread, something so simple, always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I hope James cherishes those memories.

That sounds like a neat school. I hope James cherishes these memories too.

I am glad your first day went well for you. That tea time sounds fun. Instead of making bread today, we made cookies. Yummy. I posted a no flower peanut butter cookie recipe that has only 4 small ingredients in it. It is so easy to make and so yummy. The best peanut butter cookies I have made. Little ones could make these they are so easy. Well hope you have a great rest of the week.

Tanya, thanks! Your cookies sound yummy. I’ll have to take a peek. Hope the rest of your week is super too!
