Works of God weekend
by adustyframe ~ September 21st, 2007
I had quite a few blessings this week.
1. Busier days at the store. Praise God! I was beginning to wonder what was up. I’m not caught up yet, but busier days help immensely.
2. My father in law mowed my grass. My lawn mower doesn’t work. Someone told me they’d mow and did not. The neighbor boys apparently were done mowing for me? So I didn’t really know what to do.
It was definitely a blessing. The lawn was starting to resemble “Amber waves of grain”. I’m not kidding!
3. But the best one has to do with my son.
Last night, the homeschool moms at church went out to eat. We discussed starting a get to gather for the children to practice presenting, etc.
One of the ladies at church that helps me quite a bit with child care, offered to let him stay at her house with their sitter.
I hadn’t met this girl, but I trust my friend and her choice of a sitter.
When I picked James up, I asked how things went. He said she was nice.
Then he said, “I told her I couldn’t watch her Care Bears movie and she said she didn’t believe me.”
Then he said, “Can I watch Shrek 2?” I said I didn’t really know anything about Shrek.
He said, “Well I told her, I don’t know if my mom lets me watch Shrek 2 either.”
I asked, “Was it hard for you to tell a grown up that?”
He said, “Mom! She wasn’t a grown up. She was a teen-ager.”
I have been so thankful to God since last night to see this fruit in my son’s life. He used discernment and he respected my wishes.
I know Care Bears may seem a rather silly thing to take a stand on. However, the last time we watched one it had witches and wizards and spent the movie talking about casting spells.
That’s a subject we just don’t do at our house and I told him we just won’t watch Care Bears. (I don’t care if you watch Care Bears ok?)
The fact of the matter is, I was not there and he took a stand to obey his mother.
That did my tired single-mom-for-now heart a world of good.

That is so neat that he did that. It’s things like that where you are being shown that your hard work and effort in being a Godly mother is paying off. You are doing a great job. If you didn’t care for Care bears, you wont agree with the the Shrek. It seemed as if it were geared more towards adults with some of the crude humor in it.

Lizzie, wonderful blessings!
Reminder: you forgot to put a link to your “Carnival Post With The LINKY” so that when new readers read this post they know where to go to read more of God’s works
(just a friendly reminder because I think this carnival is great
You’re so smart.

I’ll second the “no” on the Shrek movies. I haven’t seen the second, wish I hadn’t seen the first, and was told by others that the second one was worse.
I didn’t remember it until you said it, but I did see part of a care bear show or movie one time, and yes, it was pretty strange with the spells and stuff.
Thanks for the input! Nice to know we don’t need to watch them.

wow I defintely admire your son’s discernment, I’m picky with what my children watch too and spells, witches etc isn’t what I’d class as good viewing either.
Being a picky Mom is good!

No no no to shrek 2….and imagine three as well, although I did like one
Far too rude- aimed at adults just as much as children. Praise the Lord for all His blessings. My weekend turned out differently from what I thought- will blog about it tomorrow.
Thanks for chiming in on Shrek Susanna:). Life often doesn’t turn out like we want does it?:) I’ll try to remember to read.

I am so with you on the Care Bears. We do not do any form of magic at all.
That is neat when you see your children place value on their relationship with you instead of choosings instant gradification.
Hug that boy!

I was always careful what my kids watched, especially when they were still very young! What is funny is my daughter is now even more conservative about such things than I was.
I was asked recently how my son turned out so well, considering all the trials we have gone through. I told the person I really believe it was BECAUSE of going through the trials that has made him strong in his faith.
So it is with you.

We love the Shrek movies but they do have tacky, even vulgar elements that made me leave them for after age 10. One scene in Shrek2 is really offensive and my kids, having heard my objects, fast forward past it. I’m not sure how old James is, but I’m guessing from what I’ve read he’s well under 10. Of course, most of what is objectionable went sailing right over my kids heads. They are aimed more to the adults. As for “Care Bears” my daughter collected them for a while, but the cartoons were pretty insipid and never held their interests. I’ve always said no to Pokeman and that sort of thing, although to calm the cravings I let my son have a cache of cards someone offered. They were “cool” for a week or two and he moved on and gave them away to someone else!!
That said–what a great job James did!!! It’s tough to go against the others. What an awesome spirit of obedience he has developed. That’s super!
