This term’s composer is Rimsky-Korsakov.

James and I have been listening to Scheherazade.

To study a composer, we may look him up in my composers book, see when he lived, add his picture to our Book of Centuries and just listen to the music.

We study one composer per term so this is not difficult. We have a lot of time to get to know the composer and I don’t stress about it at all.

This website was mentioned on the Ambleside yahoo group.

Today, we took the time to sit down at the computer and play the game. It was very instructive and helped me make more sense of the music. It’s fun for the child to participate in as well.

We also watched 8 pianists playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumble Bee.

I finally made tags for our subject bins on the school shelf. I started to make simple tags. I was going to laminate them on “free laminating for teachers day” at Office Max.

When I sat down to work on them, I remembered I had purchased library pockets. So I dug them out and used my scrapbook supplies to make pretty tags. I laminated them, punched a hole in them, and tied them to the bins with ribbon.

They are so cute. Here are a few of them.

I also finally took the time to decorate the front of my nature journal. I purchased these three years ago just to get in the habit of using them. We’ve added things to them slowly but surely.

I’ve been living with a plain nature journal. In case you don’t know me, plain doesn’t do! I like to have and use pretty things.

James opted to keep his plain nature journal cover, but here’s mine.

School is going well. We’re on week 4 of Ambleside Year 1. We’ve already accomplished a lot. He’s catching on to narrations and copywork. I’m excited about that.

The things we’re reading are very interesting and I’m learning too!

    Great :)

We just started Week 1 of Year 1 this week. Had a hard time w/ the narrations on Sword of Damocles and Parables from Nature. I think we shoud’ve gone through a little vocab first and I *know* we should’ve read smaller sections between narrations. All the other readings are going well. SweetP especially enjoyed narrating Kipling and we’re reading a book called “Among the Forest People” that she loved. We’re getting there…

Thank you. Yes, I’ll submit it there:)

Shorter passages are really helping us. Also the narration jar. He loves it!

Ooooh, your journal is so pretty, Lizzie. Mine isn’t decorated at all. Well, not outwardly anyway. The inside pages aren’t too bad, though ;) I’d never thought of using youtube for composer study before this carnival. Where have I been? Good for you! :) I loved reading about James’ “screamed like a girl” narration, too. Good stuff :)

Thanks, Jacci. I used it plain old ugly for 3 years and had enough:)
I think I got the You Tube idea on the Ambleside Yahoo group. Do you participate in that?
