A warning

“Don’t get attached to any one word. You can substitute ‘Christ’ for presence, if that is more meaningful to you. Christ is your God-essence or the Self, as it is sometimes called in the East. The only difference between Christ and presence is that Christ refers to your indwelling divinity regardless of whether you are conscious of it or not, whereas presence means your awakened divinity or God-essence.”

–Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

This is Oprah’s new guru. What he is teaching is heresy. I have known for quite some time that Oprah is very involved in New Age spirituality. Sure she has had some interesting shows. I’ve even watched some of them. However, she has advocated many books and leaders that are teaching a false gospel.

I remember the day many years ago when I was watching her show. I completely realized how very far astray she was. She said with a straight face that she subscribed to the religious philosophy of Glenda the Good witch, “‘You always had it.  You always had the power.’  The real secret is within yourself.”

Robin emailed me a link about this and reminded me that I wanted to blog about this. Please read this man’s quotes and ask yourself how his teachings line up with God’s word.

God, the scripture is saying, is formless consciousness and the essence of who you are.”

–Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (Penguin, 2005), p. 219 [bold added]

Here is an article with a few more quotes by this man.

I don’t know if this is the very best video but here is a clip of Oprah explaining her beliefs and this man expouding on his teaching. Please take a few minutes to listen.

Thanks for this warning. I don’t watch Oprah, but I had heard her beliefs leaned toward the New Age and I am sad to see so many Christian women enthralled with her.

  2. Jenn

Oh my. Oprah has such a large (and devoted) following viewership. That is worrisome.

I have seen two Oprah shows, and that was two too many! I don’t watch her, listen to her or read her magazine. What is sad is that there are many many women who call themselves Christians who never miss Oprah’s show. The path is broad that leads to destruction.

Thanks for blogging about this. So many people are being led astray by her. It’s heartbreaking.

It sounds very similar to Scientology–believing that *you* created your own success.

I’ve been avoiding Oprah for years–I need to remember to pray for her…

Praying for her is a great idea.
