Little House Lemonade

by adustyframe ~ July 16th, 2008

James and I are doing some fun projects over the summer. Things that always seem hard to squeeze in during the school year.

This week, we made lemonade from the Little House Cookbook. Apparently, Mrs. Oleson served lemonade at one of Nellie’s parties in The Banks of Plum Creek.

Here’s how you do it–

1. Boil water and set the lemons in the water (to remove wax). The nicest surprise about this was the wonderful scent that filled the house.

**We used 5 large lemons for 2 qts. of lemonade**

2. Remove lemons from water, set on a towel, and roll around pressing on the lemons to make more juice.

3. Slice lemons thinly.

4. Layer them in a bowl. Sprinkle sugar on each layer–they ARE lemons so be a bit generous.

5. Let lemons and sugar sit for 3o minutes.

6. Press down on lemons with a spoon. We ended up squeezing each one into the bowl so we didn’t waste any juice.

7. Pour juice through a strainer (I used the tea strainer).

8. Add 2 quarts of water and enjoy.

6 Thoughts Shared to Little House Lemonade

    Hi Lizzie!
Glad that you can have these special times with James.
Excuse my ignorance, but how many lemons did you use for 2 quarts of water? This sounds delicious!
I am beginning to go through Dr. Berg’s study “Quieting a Noisy Soul”. I think I have seen it mentioned on your blog before. I had the privilege of going to the seminar when he first recorded it at his church four years ago. It was a huge help to me at the time, but I need its message again. God has given him an amazing ability to break down issues into the root problem. He makes it so understandable, and he points to the HOPE that is in Christ. I am praying for God to help me with the changes I need to make.
I said all of that, too, to let you know that I am praying for you and your family as you continue on your difficult journey. Your blog has been a blessing and an encouragement to me.

Thank you for praying and for letting me know you’ve been encouraged here!
I actually read Changed Into His Image by Dr. Berg. I haven’t heard of the one you mentioned.

  2. Prairie Rose

What fun on a hot summer day! Don’t forget that Pa, Laura, and Carrie also had lemonade at De Smet’s Fourth of July celebration in Little Town on the Prairie — and it was even more delicious than Mrs. Oleson’s. ;)

Right! I was just wondering how they got lemons on the prairie!

Your lemons look so big and lucious. Did you buy them at teh farmers market? I went to buy lemons at the store last week and they were small and 99 cents each! Ouch!

Nope, they were at the grocery store. I think they were .59 each.

My favorite lemonade (beside the sugary, pucker-y kind) is with Stevia — juice about 4 lemons into a 2 quart container, fill with water & use about 1 tsp. of Stevia
The best sugar-free lemonade you can drink!
