Nowhere else to go…

I received a catalog in the mail featuring country decor for the home. It’s right up my alley–although their prices were not.

I saw a sampler with a quote by Abraham Lincoln.

“I have been driven many times upon my knees

by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.”

This sounds pretty good, but it reminded me of my own tendency to go everywhere else before I go to God. God shouldn’t be the place I go to because I have nowhere else to go. He should be my only place to go.

Over these past couple of weeks, I’ve had several instances where I was concerned or frustrated. I heard my mother’s voice in my head saying, “Have you prayed about this?”

My mom taught us to pray about everything. I think often what a wonderful example she was to us as children. She taught us that God is concerned about everything we are concerned about and nothing is too little to take to him.

So in each instance, I prayed about the situation and saw God work.

1. I was trying to call Lee one night and the phone wouldn’t go through. I was starting to become teary. I just wanted to talk to him! I stopped and prayed and asked God to please let the phone call go through so I could talk to my husband.

I dialed again and he picked up the phone! I told him about what happened and he said, “No way!”

2. I wanted a book to help me learn my version of Photoshop. The book isn’t too expensive, but it was money I did not need to spend. I prayed about it and asked God to help me figure out how to get it.

Someone emailed me saying they wanted to get me a gift certificate, and where could I use one at? I said Amazon not even thinking about this book I wanted. When it arrived, it was enough to get the book! It just came in the mail the other day. What a blessing.

3. I waited to share this with you because sometimes some of you sweet people send me a gift when we’re going through hard times. I am always blown away by your kindness, but I didn’t want this need to come across as asking for anything.

Our furnace wouldn’t light. I haven’t told you where we live, but let me just say, we live where a furnace is absolutely necessary.

I felt panic threatening to rise. We have begun a budget and Dave Ramsey plan but we simply cannot put in a new furnace! I asked some friends to pray that it would be a small fix or that God would provide the money.

I started calling around to see who’s service fee we could afford. Lee and I discussed our options and what we wanted to do. We finally found someone who is a friend of our neighbor. He came out today and within a few minutes had our heater working!

A part was dirty and needed cleaning and adjusting. I’ve never been so happy to write a check before. I am so thankful and excited that it was a small repair. He said we definitely need a furnace next year but this one should make it through the winter.

When you’re faced with needs or wants or “small” things, take them to the Lord. He cares about everything that you face. Consider him your only place to go, not your last resort.

    Happy to hear the furnace is fixed. Will start praying now how He will help next year. We turned the heat to 66 this evening. It is suppose to be middle 30′s in the morning here where we live.

    Great post — I needed that reminder. Things have been very stressful here and I know I need to hand it over to God instead of trying shoulder it all myself. Why is it so hard?

    I’m glad the furnace is up and running. I was tempted to turn ours on last night…it’s getting to the low 40′s at night now where I am. Our first frost is coming soon!

    I’m so thankfull that you were able to get the furnace fixed at low cost. I know you definately needed it fixed. Dave Ramsey is awesome! I took the FPU class at church this summer. I had to scrape the money together for the class, but now I fell in control in stead of it controling me.

    It’s been getting into the 40′s at night here, but I still sleep with the window open. It’s a Colorado thing. CO natives have been sleeping with the windows open since it was the place to come to cure TB.

    It’s an interesting history.
