Elk
by adustyframe ~ January 8th, 2009(Our book is very old and looks quite different than this one.)
Today in the Burgess Animal Book, we read about elk. Did you know their real name is Wapiti?
Anyway, as we read the chapter, the story said this elk was named Bugler because of his call.
I decided to look up an elk’s call (on swagbucks–earned a buck by the way). You can listen here. It’s so pretty. It really does sound like an instrument.
We went back to reading and read that in the winter the elk come down from the mountains looking for food. Then I remembered something!
“James! Remember when we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s and they took us to see the elk?”
We went to the computer to find the photos. My parents live near an area where the rangers or something like that feed the elk in the winter.
We had so much fun today looking at them and seeing how the group didn’t have antlers so they are girls. Then the elk with antlers looked just as Burgess described it in his book.
Here are some of our photos from that day. You can click on each of them to enlarge them and see the details better.
(A much smaller James peeking at the elk)
It was quite a sight to see so many right on the other side of the fence. There was a bit of commotion between some of the elk and if I remember correctly they didn’t smell too fresh!
I really enjoyed making this connection today. Reason 467,000 why I love homeschooling.
You can find some elk facts here or you can go to Project Gutenberg and read the same chapter we read today.
(This chapter is called Bugler, Flathorns and Wanderhoof and is number 36 near the bottom of the page.)

That’s so cool to be able to connect things together like that.

You sound like a great homeschool mom! James is blessed! Keep up the good work! I liked the picture of James – those binoculars were a wee bit big for him.

I often do that too…go back and find photographs of something that we are learning or reading about. An example…we were learning about bees, but there were none to be found, however, several months ago we spotted a huge hive and I took photos of it. It’s great to be able to do that. It makes you want to keep taking pics of everthing!
