Cool Autumn days bring burning wood stoves here.

I enjoy walking through crisp fallen leaves, inhaling the aroma of wood and smoke.

In college, we’d sit around a blazing fire in the rec hall and drink cocoa. Laughing and playing games with friends.

Fire can be pleasant and cozy. It can also be painful or frightening.

Fiery trials is a phrase often used. Trials often are places of heat and pain.

Like the refiner, God uses heat to conform us to his image.

One favorite quote I took away from college was

“God is more concerned with your being conformed to his image than he is with your being comfortable.”

Being comfortable for us would have been not going through this trial.

Being conformed to God’s image is much more necessary though than our comfort level.

I heard a radio speaker recently discuss the 3 boys in the fiery furnace.

They had done nothing wrong. They had only obeyed God and his commands.

Yet here they were in the middle of a real fire.

While they stood in the flames, Jesus walked with them. He stood with them in their trials. The only things burned in this trial were the ties that held them in bondage.

The things that bound them burned away and they were left with the unspeakable awe of being in the presence of Jesus.

What an awesome encouragement.

Isaiah 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee : when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee
