School Update
by adustyframe ~ January 28th, 2010
This is a “bad” photo, but it’s our little kitty Mystery. She joins in school by laying on the printer–goofy cat!
This week we finished 2 books. The Landing of the Pilgrims & The Princess and the Goblin. I always love finishing a book!
James really liked The Princess and the Goblin and would often request another chapter at bedtime.
Since we finished a literature book, we started The Door in the Wall. It’s leftover from last year’s reading list, but it looks good so we started it.
We are just finishing up week 17 of Ambleside Year 3. I’ve felt like we were behind since Grandma’s funeral in September and my flu in December. However, I sat down and figured out when we’ll finish up and we’re not really behind at all. We’ll just finish a little bit later than I originally thought, but it doesn’t appear that we’ll have to do school all summer.
Our folksong this term is Land of the Silver Birch. We like the “boom de de boom boom” part in the chorus.
Our hymn for January is Redeemed How I Love To Proclaim It. (Every time I link to Cyber Hymnal, I wish that I had a way to record these songs and share them with you. The piano on here drives me nuts!)
We enjoy learning about Monet for our artist. We read What Makes a Monet a Monet and now we’re reading Linnea in Monet’s Garden. I found this book at a thrift store years ago and I’ve been waiting to read it with James. It’s a fun light book.
We daily listed our blessings on pumpkins in October and then we took a little break. In February, we’re going to list our blessings on hearts. I found these printable hearts that makes it a little easier than drawing each one.
James is copying George Washington’s Rules of Civility for Copywork. Some of them are funny, but they’re still great advice for being a gentleman.
Other than that, we’re just working on all the daily things that need to be done and enjoying each day.
I will admit that I’ve been slacking on the nature study in the winter! And when I took the composer CD’s back to the library, I didn’t check out new CD’s for our new composer. Those are two things that I have to get back on track.

Sounds like a good year. “Princess and the Goblin” is still one of my daughter’s favorite books. She read Linea too and liked it. George Washington is a GREAT copywork idea!! I’ve got my son homeschooling now due to all the recent “drama” so I might just use that tip as we start copywork next week! Well done James! And, of course the cat must be comfortable. If not, how would anything else get done!!!!

That Linnea book is so precious. My girls loved it. We saw Monet’s when we went to the Philadelphia museum of Art this past summer.

Honey, I don’t even know what it means to be “caught up” in our schooling. I am always behind.
