Last Place

olympic-ringsJames and I watched a skiing race the last day of the Olympics. When the race ended an exciting thing happened. The spectators stayed to cheer for those who came in last.

The last athletes came across the finish line 15-20 minutes after the gold medal athlete.

The fans cheered and waved their flags for the  last stragglers just as much as they did for the gold medal winner.

I imagine the athletes in dead last were encouraged by the cheering spectators.

James asked, “Why don’t they just quit if they know they’re so far behind?”
We talked about their training and determination to make it to the Olympics and how quitting just because they weren’t winning would be such a waste of their time.

He said, “Mom, that sounds like a good devotional.” I laughed! It does doesn’t it? So many applications for life.

I think of course about our life. Our family is much like the stragglers. We’re way behind in the position that makes people ask why we don’t just quit.

I hope that I finish strong even if I’m plodding along in last.

I think I’m  like skier #50. I’m moving forward with all my might praying, “Oh please let me finish and not fall over the line looking pathetic!”

All of us are in a race called life. I hope you’re with me doing your best for the Lord whether or not you’re #1.

No matter what position you’re in or how tired you are, you can know that there’s a crowd in heaven cheering you on and urging you to do your best!

Hebrews 12:1,2

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
