Teaching Bible
by adustyframe ~ May 11th, 2010A friend of mine emailed me recently to ask what I use for teaching Bible. I’m not the expert, but I didn’t mind telling her what we use.
Here are some things I’ve used in the past or am using now.
A Faith to Grown On by John MacArthur. It’s not “hard” but it’s a good doctrine review for kids
Bible passages–this list shares the passage that a story is in. New Testament should be at that site too. It just tells where the stories are in the Bible and you read straight from the Bible.
This is something I need to work more on–it’s more important for God to speak directly to the child than filling his mind with the human author’s thoughts about the Bible.
We didn’t get very far but it is also a good tool for teaching doctrine.
He memorizes Scripture in AWANA and I just pretty much use that program rather than adding more Scripture to memorize.
We’ve read a few (and I want to do more) missionary or Christian biographies.
Dave and Neta Jackson have a kids series of these that looks good.
James recently started a kid’s study by Kay Arthur. We go a bit slower than she does–we take more than one day to do a day’s work.
I want to gradually have him gain the habit of doing this on his own.

Those all sound great! We also really like Grapevine Studies’ Stick Figuring Through the Bible. The OT and NT surveys (I think that’s what they call them) are great for getting a good overview of the Biblical timeline. It’s not really doctrinal, but it provides a good context for the doctrine.
And for little ones, we’re really loving the Scripture memory books and CD’s from Scripture Memory Fellowship. (They have memory work for all ages, including adults, but we particularly like them for the little ones because the preschool books have accompanying CD’s. And the music is not annoying. lol)
