Roses~Repost from 2008

Last summer, my father in law brought over some cuttings from his tea rose bushes.

I planted them in the front of the house.

I tenderly cared for them all summer. The heat proved to be too much for two of the plants.

The middle plant did really well though. I’d water it and pull the weeds away from it. I watched as it sent out tiny green shoots that also grew.

“That’s just like our marriage.” I thought.

We have to care for it tenderly. We have to give it time and the things it desperately needs.

The little green shoots were such an encouragement to me. Marriages that are being repaired or rebuilt sometimes send out little green shoots too.

You have to keep your eyes open so you don’t miss them.

A word spoken in love instead of being snarled in annoyance. Extra time spent at home.

A note left on the table signed “love”. A phone call in the middle of the day, “just because.”

I am a firm believer in looking on the bright side. If your marriage is trying to send out some little green shoots, nurture them. Don’t pluck them out because they’re not “big enough” or because they’re not exactly what you wanted.

I’m hoping my rose bush will bloom with some pretty roses this year. If not, you can rest assured that I will not be plucking out the green shoots. I’ll keep caring for it so that it can blossom very soon.

Here’s a more recent photo of these roses. They are thriving and spreading and beautiful. I’m hoping my marriage is growing more of those characteristics too!

Your roses are so pretty! And it’s so true. Folks don’t really know how blessed they are sometimes in their marriages.
