Our Get Away

by adustyframe ~ June 14th, 2012

We had a lovely time. The weather was beautiful and the scenery was beautiful. We went to this area on an anniversary get away many years ago, so it was nice to go back.

We went to a place called Door County--it’s the part of Wisconsin that sticks out into Lake Michigan and it’s lovely! It has little towns and tons of shops and lots of water. One neat thing about the entire area is that there are no chain stores or restaurants–just small locally owned businesses. I looked at some little shops but didn’t spend money. We just enjoyed resting and being together.

Here’s where we stayed–

I read out here for awhile. I never used a hammock before–it was relaxing! I’d have stayed out there for ages but it was breezy and I got chilly!

View from our balcony

The inn was fantastic! When we first arrived, our room wasn’t quite ready. The owner showed us where the coffee was and invited us to sit on the dock. We took a long path out to their dock and sat on Adirondack chairs and looked at the bay. Very nice!

They had a “bottomless” jar of oatmeal cherry cookies–seriously–it was always full! They always had coffee, tea, or cocoa available–served in pottery cups. In the afternoon, they put out popcorn and lemonade. Then breakfast–homemade muffins, fresh blueberries, cereals or granola, coffee, yogurt, cheese, boiled farm eggs–once again served in pottery with trays to bring it back to your room. Lee and I ate on the balcony overlooking the lake.

They also had bikes and kayaks to borrow but we were not feeling adventurous–more like lazy!

We drove around the peninsula and enjoyed the scenery.  I loved this little corner with an old garage on it. Someone has kept it pretty–it’s not open anymore. I think I’m going to edit it and offer it as a print in my Etsy shop!

We ate dinner at a Swedish restaurant with goats on the roof. We had to order the Swedish meatballs–mmm! And we enjoyed lingonberry jam on various Swedish breads. The waitresses dressed in Swedish dresses and clogs–very fun!

On Wednesday, we went to see a lighthouse and then headed home a little early because Lee’s boss called and just wanted him to go ahead and pick up a load on Wednesday instead of Thursday!

I’m so thankful for some time away. We needed that–all parents need that once in awhile. Lee said he wanted us to have a special anniversary since we had so many that weren’t so great. Lots of times, we just go out to eat, but once in awhile it’s nice to have a special get away.
