About the Book:

Penny Wise introduces us to yet another family in “the neighborhood”—the Jaspers, busy with demanding jobs, busy with church, busy volunteering, parents of three active teenagers, juggling sometimes crazy schedules. All good things. Until all those “good things” feed into a series of crises that affects the whole family. Something’s gotta change!

The third in the Windy City Neighbors series, Penny Wise is a contemporary peek at an urban family wrestling with the spiritual and practical challenges of real life. The series employs the innovating storytelling technique of “parallel novels,” each with its own drama and story arc, but whose characters’ lives become intertwined with their neighbors and affect one another. Welcome to Beecham Street—a typical, isolated American neighborhood that is beginning to come out of its shell . . . for better or worse.

My thoughts:

I have been a huge fan of Dave & Neta Jackson’s books since the original Yada Yada Sisters series. I have to admit that I was a little wary about these spin off books but they’ve been good. I like to learn a little more about supporting characters in the original series. The spin off series also allow us a glimpse of the favorite characters from the Yada Yada series once in awhile.

I’ve really enjoyed all of them. This one however took me until 80% into the book (reading on my Kindle) before I felt like any sort of story was coming together and it was interesting. It REALLY pains me to say that but it’s the truth.

Most of the book was about how busy Michelle Jasper is–in incredible detail…….

I actually felt stressed out reading about how stressed out she was and it was a repetitive part of the story–over and over about every busy detail of her life. Ugghh….

There were also several details of she and her husband’s intimate life which just felt odd and out of place and not the usual Dave & Neta Jackson books that I’ve come to love. Yes, I happen to be a married woman that enjoys that part of married life but I just don’t want to read details that should be private in my Christian novel. It was jarring to me because I’ve read almost every one of their books and didn’t have this complaint before.

In other books, they talk about being in love…..have a little loving “sassy” talk one in awhile but this just felt like too much.

Also, at the end of the book Michelle’s husband was “pi**ed” about something. I actually stopped the book to check that I hadn’t misunderstood who the authors were. Is that the worst word in the world? No, but it was just so out of place for this series of books and I was disappointed.

The end of the book was good and interesting and had good points and truths but like I said the first 80% of the book was a little bit story and a lot of minute details of a busy woman’s life.

I just didn’t love this book and that makes me sad because I really do love these authors and their books. And now you know I give honest reviews!

I very much appreciate honest reviews! I haven’t read any of their books yet though I want to check out the yada-yada ones some time. But the things that bothered you in this book would bother me, too.

I will be really honest that this is the 1st time anything like this has shown up in their books. I saw another review that said the same things. I hope they listen!
